Electric scooters & e-bikes in Ireland — FAQs
Are electric scooters road legal in Ireland?
E-scooters are legal on Irish public roads only if they meet the e-moped rules — a maximum speed of 20 km/h, motor output of 400W or less and a weight under 25 kg, with lights, reflectors, brakes and a bell. Riders must be 16 or over, and no licence, tax or insurance is required. Higher-powered models in this range are sold for private land and off-road use only.
Are electric bikes road legal in Ireland?
Yes. E-bikes with pedal assist up to 25 km/h and a 250W motor fall under EU pedelec rules, so they need no licence, tax or insurance for road use in Ireland. Electric dirt bikes such as Sur-Ron and Talaria are intended for off-road and private land use; road-legal L1e versions may be available to order.
Can I buy through the Cycle to Work Scheme?
Yes — commuter e-bikes from Fiido, Engwe and Pixar are Cycle to Work eligible. The scheme covers up to €1,500 on e-bikes (€3,000 on cargo e-bikes), saving most riders 30–52%. Electric scooters and off-road dirt bikes are not covered by the scheme.
Should I choose an electric scooter or an electric bike?
Choose an e-scooter for short city trips, easy folding and the lowest entry price. Choose an e-bike for longer distances, hills and all-day comfort — and because only e-bikes qualify for the Cycle to Work Scheme.
Where can I see electric scooters and e-bikes in Ireland?
At our Dublin showroom, Unit 19B, Fashion City, Dublin 24 (D24 YT68), where you can test ride the range before you buy.
Do you deliver electric scooters and e-bikes across Ireland?
Yes — we deliver across Ireland and the EU, with bikes and scooters sent boxed and needing only minimal home setup. In Dublin, we can also deliver your e-bike fully assembled and ready to ride as a paid option — just ask.
