The School Run by Cargo E-Bike: An Honest Guide for Dublin Parents

The School Run by Cargo E-Bike: An Honest Guide for Dublin Parents

Mum riding the Fiido T2 longtail cargo e-bike with two children on the back

It's 8.20 on a wet Tuesday morning. The car's stuck behind a bin lorry, the youngest has lost a shoe, and you're doing the maths on whether you'll make the school gate before the bell. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. More and more Dublin families are swapping the second car (or the first one, some days) for a cargo e-bike, and we get asked about it most weeks in the shop.

This isn't a spec-sheet rundown. It's our honest take on doing the school run by cargo e-bike, built around the one our customers buy most: the Fiido T2 Longtail Cargo E-Bike. Inner City Scooters is the official Fiido seller in Ireland, and we have the T2 in stock in all colours, along with every add-on you need to make it a proper family bike.

Our best-selling cargo e-bike, online and in the shop

Over the past year, the Fiido T2 has been our number one cargo e-bike by a distance. Families buy it every way you can think of: online for delivery across Ireland, in person at our shop in Fashion City, Ballymount, over the phone with the team, and through the Bike to Work scheme. It outsells every other cargo bike we stock, combined.

And it's rarely bought on its own. Most of our T2 customers add the rear pegs and the child safety fence on the same day, which tells you exactly what it's being used for: carrying kids. More on those add-ons below.

If you're comparing, these are the other cargo e-bikes customers buy from us:

You can see the full range in our Cargo E-Bikes collection. For most families doing a school run, though, the T2 is the one we point people towards, and here's why.

Why a cargo e-bike for the school run?

Most school runs in Dublin are short. They're usually two to five kilometres, which is exactly the distance where a car is at its worst. You spend more time queuing, circling for a spot and idling outside the gate than you do actually driving. A bike cuts through all of that, but a normal bike with a child seat only gets you so far. Throw in a second child, two school bags, a hurley and a lunchbox, and it gets messy quick.

That's where a longtail comes in. The frame is stretched out behind the saddle, so there's a long, flat deck over the back wheel for kids and gear. Add the motor and the weight stops being a problem. You pedal as you normally would, and the bike quietly does the heavy lifting. Hills like the ones up towards Rathfarnham or Castleknock stop being the thing you dread.

The other thing parents tell us is simpler: the kids love it. Getting them out the door is a lot easier when the ride to school is the fun part of the day.

Meet the Fiido T2

The Fiido T2 is a step-through longtail cargo e-bike on 20-inch fat tyres. In plain terms, it's low, stable and easy to get on and off, even with a child already sitting on the back. That matters more than you'd think when you're balancing a bike, a schoolbag and a small person who's decided now is the time to tie a shoelace.

The headline numbers, as Fiido lists them for the EU model:

  • Total payload: 200kg (rider, kids and cargo combined), with the rear rack rated to 80kg
  • Motor: pedal assist with a Mivice torque sensor, 55Nm of torque, assisting up to 25km/h
  • Battery: 48V, 998.4Wh, removable and lockable
  • Brakes: 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes front and rear
  • Tyres: 20 x 4.0-inch CST puncture-resistant fat tyres
  • Gears: Shimano 7-speed
  • Fit: riders roughly 155cm to 200cm, so both parents can share it
  • Weather: IP54 rated, with integrated front and rear lights

It's €1,449 with us, and it's in stock now in both Forest Green and Grey.

Getting the kids on board

This is the bit most parents want to know about first, and fair enough. On its own, the rear deck is just a flat rack. You set it up for children with a couple of add-ons, and this short clip from Fiido shows how much the T2 can take on:

The Child Safety Fence with Seat Cushion is the big one. It's a rail that wraps around the rear deck like a little playpen, with a padded cushion on top. It gives smaller kids something to hold and stops wriggly legs from swinging out. Fiido designs it for children roughly 110cm to 140cm tall, which covers most of primary school.

The Rear Pegs are footrests on either side of the frame. They give your passengers somewhere solid to put their feet, well clear of the wheel and chain. We'd class these as essential if you're carrying kids at all.

For toddlers who are too small for the fence, you'll want a proper child seat. Call in to us and we'll talk you through what fits the T2 and what doesn't. We'd rather you got it right than bought the wrong thing.

A word on helmets. They aren't a legal requirement for cyclists in Ireland, but we'd never put a child on the back without one, and we'd say the same to any parent. Make it a rule from day one and it's never an argument.

The complete package: Fiido T2 add-ons

Here's everything we stock to turn the T2 into the bike your family actually needs. Pick what suits you, or call in and we'll set it all up before you ride away.

Front Basket with Cushion (€140): sits on the front rack and takes the school bags, the PE gear and whatever gets picked up in the shop on the way home, keeping the back free for the kids.

Rear Rack Cargo Bag (€70): a tidy, weatherproof spot for lunchboxes, rain jackets and the bits you don't want rattling around.

Pet Trailer (€429): because the dog wants to come too. It hitches to the back for trips to the park or the beach.

A full school-run setup of the T2, child fence, rear pegs and front basket comes to €1,804. Add the cargo bag and it's €1,874. Both are well inside the Bike to Work limit for cargo bikes, so you can get the whole lot through the scheme in one go.

What it's actually like to ride loaded

If you haven't ridden a cargo e-bike before, the first spin with a child on the back feels a little odd for about two minutes. After that, it's grand. The weight sits low and behind you, and the long wheelbase makes the bike feel steady rather than twitchy.

The torque sensor is the unsung hero here. Cheaper e-bikes use a cadence sensor, which basically switches the motor on when the pedals turn. That can feel jerky, which you really don't want with kids aboard. A torque sensor reads how hard you're actually pushing and adds power to match, so pulling away from a junction feels smooth and natural. Push gently and you get a gentle boost. Push hard up a hill and the motor digs in with you.

Stopping is just as important. The 4-piston hydraulic discs are a proper step up from the mechanical brakes on budget bikes. Two fingers on the lever is enough to pull up a fully loaded bike in a controlled way, wet road or dry. The fat tyres help too. They put a lot of rubber on the road, soak up potholes and cope with the odd stretch of gravel on a greenway at the weekend.

Then there's the kickstand, which sounds like a small thing until you've tried loading a child onto a bike that won't stay put. The T2 has a heavy-duty dual-leg stand. The bike stands upright on its own while you strap in a helmet or wrestle with a zip.

Irish weather and dark mornings

Let's be honest, this is Ireland. It's going to rain, and once the clocks go back at the end of October, some of those school runs will be in half-light.

The T2 is IP54 rated, so rain and road spray are no bother. Just don't go riding through a flooded underpass, and give it a wipe-down after a really filthy day. It comes with mudguards and integrated front and rear lights, and the colour display stays readable in the wet. For the dark months, we'd add a good rear light on the fence or bag. Hi-vis vests for the kids are a great idea too, and they tend to love wearing them.

Dress the kids the way you would for a walk to school in the rain: a decent coat, a hat under the helmet in winter and gloves. The rear rack bag keeps the spare layers dry. Our autumn riding guide has more on wet-weather care.

Battery, range and charging

Fiido quotes up to 136km on the lowest assist setting in ideal conditions. Real life is different. A loaded cargo bike with two kids, a headwind and a few hills will use a lot more battery than a solo rider on the flat. But even taking a good chunk off that figure, a typical Dublin school run of a few kilometres each way barely makes a dent. Most families will get several days of school runs out of a single charge.

The battery slides out and locks, so you can leave the bike in the shed and charge the battery in the kitchen overnight. A full charge is roughly one kilowatt-hour of electricity. At typical Irish home rates, that works out at well under 50 cent. It's hard to argue with that against a week of diesel.

The honest bits

We said this would be honest, so here's what to think about before you buy.

It's big and it's heavy. The T2 is just under 1.9 metres long and weighs close to 40kg with the battery. It won't go up a flight of stairs to an apartment, and it won't fit in a car boot. You need a shed, a garage, a side passage or a wide hallway. If you've none of those, have a think about storage before anything else.

You'll need a good lock. A bike like this is worth protecting. Budget for a proper lock, and ideally lock it to something solid at the school gate as well as at home.

Kids grow. The child fence suits roughly 110cm to 140cm. Once your eldest shoots past that, they'll likely want their own bike. That's no bad thing, and the T2 goes back to being a shopping and cargo workhorse.

It's a family bike, not a racer. Assistance tops out at 25km/h, as it should on Irish roads. If you want a zippy solo commuter, there are lighter bikes that will suit you better. The T2 is built to carry, and that's where it earns its keep.

Is it road legal?

In Ireland, an e-bike is treated like a normal bicycle when it meets the EU pedelec rules. That means pedal assist from a motor rated at 250W, cutting out at 25km/h, with any throttle limited to a 6km/h walk-assist. A pedelec needs no tax, no insurance and no licence. The T2 assists up to 25km/h and its walk-assist is limited to 6km/h, and Fiido builds the EU model to that standard. Ride it in its standard pedal-assist setting and you're riding it the way it's meant to be ridden on public roads.

If you're unsure about anything, call in or give us a ring and the team will go through it with you.

Buying online, in the shop or through Bike to Work

The Fiido T2 is €1,449 at Inner City Scooters, and you can buy it whichever way suits you:

  • Online: order the bike and add-ons on our website, with delivery across Ireland.
  • In the shop: call in to Fashion City, Ballymount, try the bike, and we'll fit the add-ons for you.
  • Bike to Work: the T2 is eligible, and the scheme has a higher €3,000 limit for cargo bikes, so there's plenty of room for the accessories too. You save on tax and pay back through your salary. Our Bike to Work guide explains how it works, and we handle the paperwork with your employer.
  • Spread the cost: Humm and Klarna instalments are available both online and in store.

As the official Fiido seller in Ireland, every T2 we sell is a genuine bike with a 1-year limited warranty, and our own workshop in Dublin can service and repair it. You're not posting it back to a warehouse abroad.

Not just for school days

Once you have one, the T2 ends up doing far more than the school run. It handles the big shop on a Saturday and trips to the park or the beach. With the kids at school, it'll take the recycling or a few bags of compost home from the garden centre. Some families bring it camping.
